Places of Revelation

A documentary series reconstructing the time, place and historical circumstances surrounding the revelation of Qur'anic surahs and verses through research, live-action photography and cinematic reconstruction.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Every episode begins with three questions: When did the revelation arrive, where did it happen, and what was taking place around it?

Places of Revelation does more than describe the context of revelation. It makes visible the geography, social conditions and historical narratives recounted in the Qur'an through a cinematic documentary language.

TWO LAYERS OF STORYTELLING

The world surrounding revelation and the histories remembered through it.

While examining the circumstances of revelation, the series also reconstructs the communities, journeys, conflicts and cautionary histories narrated within the revelation itself.

CORE VISUAL PRINCIPLE

We do not depict the sacred moment. We rebuild the world that witnessed it.

Prophet Muhammad and Khadija are never shown. Their presence is conveyed through place, objects, thresholds, wind, light, shadow and sound.

PRODUCTION APPROACH

Research

Context of revelation, sira, historical narrations, geography and differing scholarly views are considered together.

Location

The present landscape is filmed as the documentary's physical foundation.

World-building

Architecture, costume, crowds, animals, environments and period detail are reconstructed through 3D, CGI and AI-assisted workflows.

One cinematic language

Live action, reconstruction, editing, colour and sound are integrated to create one continuous documentary reality.
